Factors of an Office
Design
It is more complicated to design an office building
today than ever before because considerations must be given to the
technological needs. Our offices must be technologically capable of
providing for various networking requirements. However, the manner in
which new buildings are constructed and wired today enable individual
company offices to be situated in nearly any location.
Another factor to consider in an office building is lighting. There are
certain standards which require sufficient lighting levels for
individual working conditions. Each company may have certain
requirements for security, and may want to have a certain flexibility
for the design and layout of the office. These requirements may
necessitate special buildings which are designated for use as offices.
Office buildings, which are also referred to as office blocks, are
actually commercial buildings which contain certain areas for the use of
offices. The purpose of the building is to provide working environments
for employees and managers of a particular company or firm. Contained
within the building are offices which are set up and designated for
specific workers, whether they be executives, managers or clerical
staff. Each worker would be provided with a desk and most likely a
personal computer and other equipment necessary for the person to
perform his duties.
An office building will be divided into sections containing different
companies or different departments of one company. There will probably
be a reception area, conference rooms, individual offices, clerical
areas, and restrooms. In some offices, especially larger ones, there
will also be kitchen facilities with beverage areas, a refrigerator and
microwave which can accommodate workers on their designated breaks, as
well as those workers who prefer to stay within the office to eat lunch.
The standard office facilities of today include optical connections to
local telecommunications facilities; structured cabling with Category 5
or above for networking and telecommunications capabilities. Many larger
offices will have locations for parking, often underground. Parking
facilities are beneficial and convenient for workers who do not have to
venture outside to collect their vehicle. This saves much time as well
as the inconvenience of having to brave the elements in extremely cold
climates.
